As a child I had multiple personalities and I’m grateful to my mother for not committing me or trying to “fix” me. She knew I was crazy but she never tried to label or diagnose my crazy. She gave me space for my imagination to roam free and time for my personalities to find outlets.
In high school, everybody was singing songs from this new musical, Wicked. I was curious what the fuss was about and found the Broadway script online. I read it in one night, got sucked in, and genuinely became interested in theater. My freshman year of college, I went to see my tutor in the show “A Dolls House.” I saw him acting on stage and that was the moment I knew I could do it too. The very next semester I got the courage to change my major to theatre and took my first acting class. The first week of monologues I performed August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson” and got the first applause of the class and that was the moment I knew I was good enough. My junior year, I took my first screenwriting course and that was the moment I was sure what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I literally never stopped writing. I would be writing scripts in other classes, during church, and plenty of other inappropriate places or when I conveniently had spare time. I had been writing in a diary since the age of 6 and still kept it up well into my adulthood. I've always had multiple personalities/ characters in my head while growing up (and people not understanding), I was SO weird. My biggest regret is I did not listen to my gut, and get involved sooner but it's ok now because this is all I think about. Like Jeremiah (in the Bible) said- it's like fire shut up in my bones! I can't picture myself doing anything else for the rest of my life.
I decided to work towards becoming an actor/filmmaker full time a few years back and while it has been a journey that I’m still on, I’ve decided that I want find and create as many opportunities for myself with people that look like me and for people that look like me. I created a small production company to produce content I write, stage plays, short films, web series, spoken word pieces, promo videos, talk shows, and feature films. DNGinc. Productions got its name from the middle initials of each Green family member so it’s identity is rooted in family.
I am a proud black woman who is a storyteller: sometimes it’s through directing, sometimes it’s through acting, and sometimes it’s through writing. Since I’m lucky, I choose to do all three!
